About Christopher Palin
Building Surveyor for a Structural Warranty company in Manchester.
I am currently employed as a Building Surveyor for Architectscertificate Ltd in Altrincham, previously working at the APS Group Ltd in Cheadle Heath, Stockport. At APS I worked mainly on commercial and retail projects across the UK and Europe, in particular, Ford showroom upgrades. Although I enjoyed the challenge of travelling to various cities and countries, and meeting new people, I am now enjoying a role closer to home.
I have over thirty years’ experience in the construction industry, both within the domestic and commercial markets. Starting out from school as a carpentry and time-served joinery apprentice, I was fortunate to learn my craft from very experienced craftsmen who taught me many, but in particular, traditional roofing skills. My apprenticeship was validated by City & Guilds certification.
At the age of twenty five I went back to college studying HNC in Building Studies, following the quantity surveying path. This was a challenge of commitment as I continued working full-time and studied over a four year period. The HNC helped and gave me inspiration to form my own company firstly with a business partner, forming Cedar Construction Ltd. We employed joiners and bricklayers, completing projects up to £500,000, including our own work shop in the grounds of Crewe Hall. We produced timber mouldings and specialised oak work in the restoration of the Hall into a hotel. This was some of the finest carpentry I have ever carried out.
In 2007 I formed Baytree Construction Ltd, completing new builds, extensions and barn conversions. Using my experience, I provided a local trust- worthy business only using experienced and well trained craftsmen and quality materials. We gained nominations from clients for various construction awards including: FMB (Refurbishment Project of the Year), FMB (Master Builder of the Year) and Total People (Training Award – Apprentice Joiner).
In 2015 I made the decision to further my studies in construction, registering with CABE and attending courses. Having decided to become a building surveyor, I gained experience by shadowing a building control surveyor and also within my role with the APS group surveying Ford showroom projects across Europe. My current role at Architectscertificate Ltd enables me to carry out building control surveying, onsite periodic inspections, desk top assessments and provide in-house technical advice within the company warranty team.
